Things to come

Seems like only yesterday....
Summer seems to take forever to come around when you are a kid. When you are a seasoned adult it comes around sooner, especially when you are a true lover of the cooler seasons which I TRULY am. Yesterday was the warmest day in months. We headed to the local pools seeking the familiar smells of warming pasties, chlorine and the sensation of cool (read: cold) water on our pale winter skins. This old summer ritual didn't disappoint.
Postscript: As I write this the breeze is cool and soft drizzle is falling :)

7 Flowers - Wisteria

Day 7 - Saturday. Wisteria, like fruit blossoms, seem to flower overnight. Wisteria has such a heady scent and is an immediate reminder of last years warmth. I photographed these Wisteria yesterday. The sun was high and I think this is why the flowers appear a little transparent and why the colours are so unusual. This is the last posting for this short project:-)

7 Flowers - Nasturtium

Day 6 - Thursday. Nasturtiums growing in the shady spaces in our backyard. I don't think I can recall a house that I have lived in (since leaving the family home where they did'n't grow) that hasn't had Nasturtium growing wherever they please. The kids love to pick and nibble on them, finding pleasure in eating the pretty flowers because they can, never minding the sour taste.

7 Flowers - Eucalyptus blossoms

Day 5 - Wednesday. So delicate. A soft mix of yellow and pink.

7 Flowers - Daisies

Day 4 - Wednesday. Pretty white daisies growing in my neighbours yard.

7 flowers - Freesias

Day 3 - Tuesdays. One rainy Sunday earlier this year we planted an assortment of bulbs. They have grown, flowered and are now at the very end of their glory. This season the freesias were my favourite.

7 flowers - Pansy

Day 2 - Monday.
We planted these pansies months ago along with miniature marigolds to woo the bugs that dwell in and around our veggie patch. I love the texture of pansy petals. They make me think of the softest and finest velvet. For some trivia, pansy is derived from the french pensée meaning "thought", as their small faces were likened to our thoughtful ones.

7 flowers - Wall flowers

Day 1 - Sunday. I have set myself the small challenge of adding a new Spring flower a day for one week. Let us see how I go. We picked these out while we were at the markets on Friday. Wall flowers - love the name.

Sweetly discarded

For me a shirt, skirt or a pair of shoes will tend to fit until they become too worn out or are discarded out of taste. For my girls, it is a forever changing body and a new stage in development that determines what is disregarded. There are some things that I have particular difficulty handing on, shoes and teddies are just some them. I have a small old suitcase with outgrown pairs of my girls shoes from the early years. I think the shoes are particularly hard to hand on as they are reminders of all the places they have been and all of the things they have done, and are the trusty little vehicles that allow my young ones to climb over rocks, walk over pointy gum nuts and step on sharp gravel.

Pink blossoms

Blossom trees grown in our back yard
on our tree
pink blossoms growing on our tree
****
These blossoms growed on our tree
falling blossoms on our tree
in our backyard
Falling, blown by the wind

Stepping out

Today we headed out to the gardens....and stepped in and out of sun and shadows waited patiently for the fish to kiss our fingersand after a small while patience payed off found an unusual Ginko leafand had a taste of things to come
It was really warm, around 26 degrees, the warmest day we have had in months. We left the house in the morning without sunscreen and hats. After months of chill I am now unaccustomed to the summer ritual of covering up against the sun. It was a good day. We met with friends, made our acquaintance with a gentle rat named Flower-bell and had some time to frolic by ourselves too. The best kind of day really.

An olive in a cup

I saw the lovely singer Holly Throsby the other night. In one of her songs she searches for some kind of gesture or peace offering to give to a friend she has done wrong. One of these is an olive in a cup. This lyric left an image in my mind that stayed with me for much of Sunday - a scratch that needed to be itched. I took this photo and nolonger felt itchy.

Old Laurel

This Camphor Laurel grows in the middle of our backyard. It appears that it was cut down at some point as there is a big old stump in the middle of surrounding slim trunks. The original tree could be around 50 years old while the trunks are maybe 10 years old or so. It is a beautiful tree and we all agree that it is the best part of the backyard.

Tapestry

This album cover used to hold my attention when I was a child. Just the other day, after many years of being stored away at my mums, I once again surveyed its faded homely scene. I found myself begining to wonder, just as I did when I was small, what the rest of the room looked like, what the outside view might hold and what lay behind the closed door.

Day light, shine bright

Garden time on the first day of spring. The light was so bright and cast fantastic shadows wherever we pleased to stand and look. Working indoors three days a week makes me want to play catch up in the outside world on my days off. It's shaping up to be a sunny weekend too. Still chilly enough though for rubber boots and cardies.

Lovers

When placed together these acorn leaves make me think of the bodies of lovers. Titles for the images came to me as I put together the set. Descriptions like closer, shelter, solace, apart, together, and one, all seemed fitting.
