I would like to give thanks to Eve Arnold, who passed away today at the age of 99, for her compassionate and personal approach to her photographic subjects who ranged from the poorest of the poor, everyday folk, civil rights leaders and to the most celebrated. Her photographs have made me think a lot about ways of seeing and the choices we have when we take a photograph. There is a nicely written obituary in the UK Guardian here.

"I have been poor and I wanted to document poverty; I had lost a child and I was obsessed with birth; I was interested in politics and I wanted to know how it affected our lives; I am a woman and I wanted to know about women..." Quote from here.

So thank you Eve, rest in peace.

There is a wonderful photo of Marilyn taken by Eve Arnold, where she is doing her hair in a bathroom, dress hitched up (probably so she can stay cool) and you can see her knickers (they look surprisingly granny-ish). Do you know the one I mean?
