It has been really very hot here for a long time now. The BOM say 34 but after a week or so of dry heat and still nights it feels so much hotter. My little one has been unwell all week, the doctor reported bronchitis this morning. So this week has seen us spending most of our days inside, away from the relief of the pool and beach, with cabin fever geting the better of us all now and then. On the up side, I am anticipating the coming Adelaide Festival. I am quietly excited about Jane Birkin singing Serge.

I would like to give thanks to Eve Arnold, who passed away today at the age of 99, for her compassionate and personal approach to her photographic subjects who ranged from the poorest of the poor, everyday folk, civil rights leaders and to the most celebrated. Her photographs have made me think a lot about ways of seeing and the choices we have when we take a photograph. There is a nicely written obituary in the UK Guardian here.

"I have been poor and I wanted to document poverty; I had lost a child and I was obsessed with birth; I was interested in politics and I wanted to know how it affected our lives; I am a woman and I wanted to know about women..." Quote from here.
So thank you Eve, rest in peace.

It was cool and the skies were dramatic at times along the way but summer was waiting for us when we arrived in the South East. And so there was swimming for hours, staying up late and sleeping in, drinking good wine in the Coonawarra, looking out over the light green glass ocean at Robe, pink noses and sandal lines and then home again. Happy New Year for tonight! x

Not watching the clock too closely, knowing that the school bell will be ringing on the way there anyway. Wow wee, change IS as good as a holiday! - I am also on holiday (at home) so the goodness is double ;-) I chucked in my day job a few weeks ago and have had some time to do some of those everyday simple things that were once just part of my day or week, like posting here more often. I have another few weeks off before starting an new job which is less hours and will be a really nice change, and the new year, looks like it will bring with it the gift of some more space -to think, plan, create and to give a little more. I am just now setting myself the task of adding a photo here a day until boxing day. I have noticed that others in this space often post a photo on Friday that describes one small quiet moment in an otherwise busy week. I will just be finding one of those moments to post here everyday.

Colours and details. A very Adelaide spring day with blue skies, bright sun and dry heat. I said goodbye to my lingering cold and shook of last weeks blues and headed into the city and gardens to make the most of my day off and the first day back at school. How pretty the city is at this time of year. The art gallery has had a bit of a change of furniture lately and has some fresh Australian modernist paintings on display in the purple gallery. I just love these terrazzo stairs too.

Almost time to leave tonight for a short solo trip to Melbourne for a dear friends birthday and to catch up with my lovey brother. My daughters sudden high temperature made my happy go luck step falter a little this morning and I began to wonder if I should leave her while she is feeling so poorly. But she has now perked up a little and I keep reminding myself that she will be happy with her dad and big sister while I am away and that it really is OK to miss one fever out of the many we have shared together. A couple of days at the seaside. I found myself taking a couple of deep breaths and then without any thoughts of resistance found myself slowing down after weeks of activity and must do's. The days were misty, the seas were choppy and there was a king tide - the highest in 7 years we heard. In someplace there was no sand to walk on and the winter sun only showed itself once or twice. But we found many things to do and an ever so cozy place to have hot chocolates and a good glass or two of red wine. Just before we headed off the skies cleared and I took this gull picture. The sun followed us on the drive home.

Saturday, sunny and warm with a little bit of a chill in the air. We drove south through the hills to a lovely little school to celebrate the autumn season and its gifts - one year we came home with this. Later that night we spent time with friends nearby and awoke the next morning to a different sky and on went the warm socks and and scarf as we headed out for a walk. Walking happily with friends, spotting gum nuts and picking late season blackberries.

an easy sunday at home (feb)

Love a good sunday. A good sunday can be a slow breakfast in bed for four or up at 6 making pancakes, eating tomatoes and basil fresh from from the morning market, heading out early for a walk or pottering in pj's till noon. Whatever happens on Sunday it seems to be the day when we feel easy enough to just do as we feel. What do you like about Sunday? I have also been enjoying sunday over here at come over sunday.

Margrethe Mather. Looking at some dearly loved black & white women photographers today. It all started this morning when I saw the sale of Picasso's 'muse' at $39.9m. Curious about the subject of this painting, I soon found that Picasso had many talented women in his life whose art was in the shadow of his celebrated own. My wanderings soon took me to the subjects of photographers and to Mather, whose work has much to celebrate.

summer days #2 - salty dog

We headed down to the coast to spend the day with some family and had so much fun. Salty dog, a new friend, loved the girls and was an enthusiastic constant companion. I am back at work now but am still feeling very relaxed and summery. I know the beach doesn't have a glow in these pics but the water was nice and warm and just right :)

A big old mulberry tree growing along the river. We rode by on our bikes and stopped to watch pairs of women picking and chatting. We had nothing to keep the wet ripe berries in so we ate our pick as we went. Later in the day we went back donned in black and picked again, maybe not enough for mulberry jam but just enough for a delicious pie or crumble.

...at the beach yesterday it was cool and windy. We walked the length of the jetty with tussled and twisty hair. We watched windsurfers thrown around and lifted out of the water while grains of sand pelted us - twas great - exciting - and refreshing. .

A summer rain storm has left the parched neighbourhood looking shiny and new. My little one and I took a long walk along the river. Where we crossed over on stepping stones on the weekend has now been flooded over. Now the skies are all dark and silvery promising maybe just a little more rain.

very warm these last few days. Yesterday was spent at the local pools. Today we decided to tough it out at home and make some fun. Too sluggish to be up to much so my camera and I walked around the house for a little while taking pictures here and there and capturing some fun moments. We haven't put up a tree yet - Christmas has come so soon again. We will save that ritual till next weekend. The rain has just started to fall....

Yikes! We have been mostly without an internet connection for over a week. thanks to Saturdays school fair we now have a new box of raggedy and damp smelling children's books (not complaining, promise) to sort through. Do you remember Puffin picture books in your school library? Well, it looks like many in the box are of that vintage. Some gems include Rosie's Walk and The Surprise Party by Pat Hutchins which gave my little one and I the giggles. I love her drawing and the colours she uses. On our last night away we were too bushed to put the tent up and slept under the milky way. It was my little ones first time and we watched and waited with anticipation for her to open her eyes the next the morning to see her surprise, knowing she would have forgotten in sleep where she was. She wore a similar expression of surprise back at home in her own room the other morning when she spotted scout cat at the end of her bed (he usually sleeps on her sisters bed) - a little event so exciting for her and another special moment for me to remember.

waking from a day long nap cat has worked up an appetite. The ritual of nagging and wooing begins. Tonight I have some time on my hands and let him work a little for his supper. The sunshine and blue skies has receded and the familiar silver skies have returned. I am not complaining, it is nice to have a little of both before the long summer nudges spring away.

a six hour drive to the Flinders. The passing country side changing as we go. We pass first the pink salt lakes and so many fields of canola to meet the mountains and the red dirt of the out back. We stopped at this hall in the tiny town of Locheil. One little lady modestly presided over trestle tables of her own work. Matinee jackets, crochet blankets, peg bags, aprons, child and dolls clothes, crochet bags and so many more hand crafted items. My daughter and I tried to estimate the time it would have taken to produce such a body of work, years and years. We are off for the weekend to my sisters wedding. So good to have the spring school holidays off with my girls. My little blog here has been on my mind during the cold months - a busy winter with not nearly enough time to stop and smell this years rain drenched roses. A few days into the holidays and a new picture folder with colour and patterns is filling up. I picked this beautiful hydrangea looking geranium from the roadside yesterday. I haven't seen one quite this shape or colour before The other three pics were just taken randomly around the house over the last few days. The last is a 35mm film pic of my daughter taken about 5 years ago in summer. I still clearly recall asking her if I could take a shot of the daisy in her hair and her posing against the cold brick wall at our old house. Let's see if I can post again tomorrow. We have been paying the sour sob a lot of attention this late winter and spring. The girls have gone mad picking large bunches of them. My little one cried when the lawn was cut and her beautiful flowers had been taken away. Their delight has led me to taking studies of them, indoors and outside, petals folded and apart, and tonight I found myself going through a seasons worth of shots of this sunny, pesky weed.

The beach in winter is in my favourite 5. We arrived with the last of the late afternoon and just in time to see the sun slowly sinking into the ocean. It was both loud and quiet and peaceful and restless. Our eyes took a little while to adjust to the colour and light and the limitlessness. The girls ran up and down with another small friend until their feet were red like BBQ ready chops. That night there was a partially eclipsed full moon. We drank and ate with friends and felt merry like it was christmas. We must get back again soon:-)

In the morning, when we rise, that's the time I love the best - to paraphrase Donovan x - we had a lovely slow Sunday morning after a crazy go fast Saturday. Today is the Queens birthday holiday, so one more day off work and school for us. These photos were all snapped within minutes of each other. It all started when a bird flew into our window and alerted scout's feline attention, then came my young ones breakfast requests, toast and butter, a baby chai and my old school favourite, apples with brown sugar and cinnamon. Happy birthday I x who turned 6 on Thursday - some pics of that soon xxxx.

Our old neighbourhood is an old neighbourhood and there are many well established frangipani trees in pink and yellow and a couple that are sunset orange. My girls came to know which ones flower early and late and which ones hold the most potent scent. Lemon trees are also plentiful and often growing near footpath fences, making it nice and easy to pick a few on your way home. A sweet little tin house has a row of them behind it's neat white picket fence. These lemons are nice and large and we all agreed were the smelliest and juiciest of them all. The new neighbourhood is a little thin on the frangipani (happily we have planted two of the best from the old neighbourhood here). Thankfully Lemons are in good supply. Over the summer I came across a little lot of land that was gifted to residents by the local council. It's a funny little lot that is neither playground or park. It doesn't even have a bench to rest on. What makes the lot a real find is the established lemon tree growing there with it's abundant ripening fruit. I have promised my little one lemon curd and lemon meringue. If anyone has any other ideas for lemons I would love to hear them.

My planned week of flowers on four leaves passed with only one post. I will store my floral shots away and wait a little while for the winter flowers to bloom and then start a week afresh. Happily we played and made this morning. Teddy bears on parade. The warm autumn sun shining through the windows, lighting up colours within the house. Little red beanie brighter than bright as if it had been hand coloured.

Even though there is an illustration in the tile and one or two photos may not be strictly portraiture, this photo tile is a little celebration for an old love and (when it comes to photography) my first love.

Autumn, you're just in time

Ducks a flying and hearts a burning. The Adelaide Festival draws us out on a cool Sunday evening. A basket of trusty Autumn favourites gets a spot by our front door. Since seeing the film Julie and Julia our consumption of butter has gone up and the olive oil has barely made it out of the pantry. My daughter asked me to make the chocolate cake from the film. I found the recipe but making it would have required a good shop up to gather all of the ingredients. I went on the hunt for a more simple but still decadent recipe and found the perfect one from Leave room for dessert.....

Hello, how busy are the days! In between being out and about, at school and at work there are the in between times when the girls can make up there own games, I can wander (wonder) around with my camera, and we can think about what we we would like to do next, be it running a lazy finger along the spines in the bookshelf, baking a cake or making plans of some sort. These in between times are the times when I think about how quickly time passes, how the girls are growing and of all the things we enjoy together. Two baby teeth lost and two new adult teeth growing in their place x.
